Called up in the morning as my boiler wasn't working. Despite the engineers van being broken into, he still said he would come out as my 1 year old was in the house.The engineer Lee turned up on time and was a very genuine guy, very helpful and happy to answer any questions about the system.Even though he was unable to fix the problem on the visit to provide heating, he left and returned with some electric heaters for the house free of charge!Turns out I may need a new heating system too which I'll gladly get installed through this company!

He recommended a few problems that needed fixing (new flue, magnetic filter and system flush etc).I then rescheduled an appointment with Heatsy to carry out the recommended work. Can plumbers fix boilers?

Anyone who works with gas in England and Gas must be Gas Safe registered.

Because many aspects of plumbing and central heating are similar, often heating engineers will also do plumbing work, but plumbers who are not Gas Safe registered are not allowed to work on your boiler or any other gas appliance.

So a heating engineer can undertake a plumbing pipe repair but a plumber can't address boiler breakdowns.

Always ask to see the engineers’ ID cards to make sure they’re legal and suitably trained to work on your gas appliances.

Should I repair or replace my boiler?

The decision to get your heating fixed or have a boiler replacement when it’s broken is dependent on the age and required work.

Our honest advice is to never consider replacing a boiler that’s less than ten years old, occasionally we find boilers that are so badly installed we do advise customers that a replacement would be more cost-effective, but this is very rare.

Can I fix my boiler myself?

Not really. If there is a small problem like low pressure you can top it up yourself which may temporarily get the heating working again.

If anything, external needs repairing, the pump, a radiator etc and you’re comfortable in doing so, there is no legal objection to you attempting the heating system fix yourself.

But, if you need to remove the case from your appliance, interrupt the gas supply or change any parts in a gas appliance, you need to be a Gas Safe registered heating engineer.
